Port Sainte Foy, Dordogne
History
Then they would be transported with the current down to Libourne and the Port of Bordeaux before exporting them to England and Holland.
Another historical aspect of the house was that it was used as a "KOMMANDANTUR"; a German commander's head quarters during World War II.
The Musée de La Batellerie is a place where you will learn about life in days of yore through the history of the river Dordogne. Handcrafted models of trading activity scenes and different types of boats used throughout the ages. To finish off your visit, there is wine tasting from the appellations of Sainte Foy La Grande and Montravel at "La Maison du fleuve et du vin".
Designed by Victor Louis,
the architect of The Opera
of Bordeaux, one of the most active late 18th century
French Neoclassical architects.
This town mansion once belonged to a wine merchant, whereby the history of wine transportation began.
Wine barrels from local vineyards were brought and kept in the chai, right above the Port before loading onto the gabarres; traditional river boat with a flat bottom which allows the boat to carry a maximum load in a shallow draft.
